Vol. 3 Issue 1

Happy New Year! Welcome to my first newsletter of 2023. I hope you continue to enjoy reading my recommendations for novels in the crime, mystery, and thriller genres. As always, please let me know what you think of my selections, and be sure to send me any suggestions of novels you would like to recommend to our newsletter community. My choices in this issue span different decades and countries and combine intricate plot twists with fully realized characters.

The Huntress by Kate Quinn British war correspondent Ian Graham becomes a Nazi hunter after World War II, motivated by his obsession to hunt down the woman who killed his brother. At the same time, Jordan McBride, a young photographer in Boston, grows increasingly skeptical of her widowed father’s fiancé, whose past is shrouded in mystery. In The Huntress, Quinn takes readers on an intense rollercoaster ride as Graham and McBride, continents apart, take different paths to discover the truth they seek.

The Winter Guest by W. C. Ryan In 1921 during the Civil War in Ireland, IRA intelligence officer Tom Harkin is sent by his boss to investigate the death of Maud Prendeville, his former finance and a supporter of the Easter Rising. Maud was shot during an IRA ambush, but the attackers insist they left her alive. Harkin’s efforts to identify the murderer puts him in the crosshairs of the bitter sides in a turbulent war. Ryan masterfully creates an atmosphere of fear and danger as Harkin and the locals struggle to survive the violence surrounding them. Fortune Favors The Dead by Stephen Spotswood First in a series that introduces readers to unorthodox PI Lillian Pentecost and her intrepid sidekick Willowjean “Will” Parker, a former circus performer. The two are hired by the family of Abigail Collins, who is bludgeoned to death at a Halloween party. This mystery is fast-paced, full of plot twists and humorous observations from the quirky glib Will Parker, who narrates the story. It all adds up to a fun, clever romp. I look forward to reading more of the series. A World of Curiosities by Louise Penny In Louise Penny’s 18th novel of her Tree Pines mystery series, this master storyteller weaves together a tale of murders that span several decades and forces her protagonist Armand Gamache to confront an evil that continues to haunt him. As always, Penny creates richly drawn characters and a fast-paced plot that keeps the reader rapt until the conclusion.

Contest Win a Surprise Gift. By now, you probably realize I’m a voracious reader. To start off the new year, I devised a fun contest with an answer that can’t be googled. Guess how many books I read during 2022. Whoever comes closest wins a whimsical gift sure to please a reader. Email your answer to chrisquarembo@gmail.com. I’ll announce the winner in the next issue. Patronize Independent Booksellers Whenever you buy books, please consider purchasing from independent booksellers who remain passionate about books, love to share their knowledge, and provide a vital link between readers and authors. Watch your inbox for my next newsletter out in early March. In the meantime, please feel free to share your thoughts and recommendations with me. Reminder: Please be sure to add my email to your contacts list to ensure the newsletter arrives in your inbox, not in your spam file
