Exciting News!

My Debut Novel Killer Deals is being released on May 16. Here is a brief description of the story…

Killer Deals by Chris Quarembo

Philadelphia private investigator Andrea Fabiano is no stranger to tough cases that require her to roll up her sleeves and get her hands dirty. However, when she takes on what seems like a routine insurance investigation for her longtime client, insurance executive Nate Warner, she soon finds herself embroiled in a dangerous conspiracy that puts her life on the line. Despite having just completed an arson investigation course, Andrea is unprepared for what she discovers when she begins rooting around the charred remains of an empty warehouse that was destroyed by fire. Shockingly, she finds the burned remains of a human body, setting off a chain of events that will test her investigative skills and push her to her limits. As the case takes increasingly mysterious turns, Nate Warner goes missing, leaving Andrea to navigate a web of financial fraud and murder that leads her into sinister and corrupt corners of the city. Along the way, she’ll have to confront dark truths about her own past and deal with strained relationships, including with her foster brother Tom Volpe, who happens to be the police detective assigned to the case. Despite the challenges she faces, Andrea is determined to get to the bottom of the case and bring those responsible to justice. Along the way, she’ll discover unlikely allies and make surprising connections, all while fighting to stay alive in a dangerous and unpredictable world.

Killer Deals will be available in paperback on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and Bookshop.org, a website which benefits independent bookstores.

Recommendations

Here are my recommendations for this issue. Novels I found to be well-written, expertly plotted, and enjoyable to read

The Widows of Malabar Hill by Sujata Massey

The obstacles of 1920s patriarchal Indian society fail to deter Perveen Mistry, the daughter of a respected barrister, from earning a law degree in Oxford, England. She now works as a solicitor in her father’s firm in Bombay (today’s Mumbai), although she is not permitted to appear in court. Still, when her father is hired to execute the will of a wealthy businessman, being a woman becomes a distinct advantage. As devout Muslims, the businessman’s three widows live in strict seclusion, entirely separate from male society. Perveen is the only visitor who is able to gain access to these women. She quickly grows suspicious that they may have been forced to sign away the rights to their inheritance. As Perveen gets closer to the truth, tensions rise, suspicions abound, and murder results. In Perveen, Massey has created a character who must make difficult choices in order to navigate the life she wants to live.

The Bullet That Missed by Richard Osman

Osman retains his expert touch in crafting the third installment of the Thursday Murder Club, a best-selling series. A quartet of British octogenarians living in a retirement community displays their investigative smarts and sharp wits as they pursue villains and murderers with ties to the Cold War past. The two earlier novels in the series are The Thursday Murder Club and The Man Who Died Twice. Suspense with laugh-out-loud humor proves a winning combination.

Exiles by Jane Harper

Aaron Falk, a federal investigator, travels to a small Southern Australian town to serve as godfather to his best friend’s son. He arrives during the town’s annual food and wine festival where the year before Kim Gillespie disappeared and is presumed dead, but her body has never been found. She was part of a close-knit group of friends, who now gather for the christening. Falk, an outsider, begins to investigate what happened to Kim when he realizes the mystery of her disappearance continues to cast a pall over her friends and the townspeople. In Exiles, Harper has created characters that feel real, have unique personalities, and have secrets that slowly emerge. She also captures the beauty of the countryside and the atmosphere of life in South Australian wine country. The plot is complex but seamless in the hands of an expert storyteller.
